THE HUNTERVILLE HUNTAWAY FESTIVAL

SINCE 1998

It all started in the local pub when a few locals — Tony Theed, Richard Horrocks, and Thomas Powell — dreamed up a race inspired by the Cardrona Shepherd’s Run. We didn’t have a mountain, but we did have a pretty steep hill… and that was enough!

The festival has grown every year and now draws 4,000–5,000 visitors annually. It’s the only event of its kind in the North Island — proudly trademarked and full of rural charm.

A true family day out, there’s something for everyone. From face painting and magic shows to bouncy castles for the kids — it’s a packed day of fun, entertainment, and country spirit.

You won’t want to miss it!

THE FESTIVAL IN ACTION

HUNTERVILLE

Tucked between Taupō and Wellington on State Highway 1, Hunterville is a small rural town with a big heart and rich history.

Established in 1884, the village is named after George Hunter, who walked all the way from Wellington and claimed the spot with a peg. Today, it’s home to around 430 people, many of whom still work the same land their ancestors settled generations ago. Hunterville is known for its deep farming roots and friendly locals.

Don’t forget a photo with the Huntaway dog statue on SH1 - a nod to Hunterville’s title as the Huntaway Capital of the World, or the playful sheep sculptures on Bruce Street.

It’s a town full of character, charm, and community spirit — well worth a visit.
